What is diarrhea?

Diarrhea is characterized by loose, watery stools or a frequent need to have a bowel movement.
It frequently causes dehydration due to excessive loss of water with stools.

According to WHO 2004 estimates, 527 000 children aged <5 years die each year from vaccine-preventable rotavirus infections most of these children live in low-income countries.

Incidence of Diarrhea due to Rota Virus in Pakistan is estimated to be around 24% according to sentinel sites’ data.

How do you prevent diarrhea?

Rota virus can be prevented by vaccination of children. Rota Vaccine is given at the age of 6 and 10 week according to the EPI schedule. Improvement of hygiene and sanitation are also recommended along with vaccination, in order to minimize chances of disease.
